Words not Swords

100 Poems for World Peace

In a dramatic departure from Miriam’s standard poetic fare where she tackles the mundane observations of every day life and every day people. Here, in Words not Swords Miriam takes direct aim at war, conflict, geoploitics and anything else remotely related to humanity and its battles. From ancient times at the Battle of Kadesh with Ramses II, to the Battle of Agincourt, World War II, Iraq, Afghanistan and whatever else, Miriam effectively blasts the idea of war to smitherines with a battalion of visionary ideas, marching across the pages like an army of words ready to strike out should they be challenged or threatended. One must ask, did Kim Jong-un read this book before calling Donald Trump?

Words not Swords marching out the door

I am so happy to have two of my 2019 works, Words not Swords and I am Poet on sale at the Poets’ Corner Bookshop Marrickville, and selling like hotcakes if I may say so myself. At this rate I’ll be making a visit to my trusty printer to place another oder for both titles. My advice to you is, but now or risk missing out on a first edition copy. It’s up to you!

A Country Wedding

Wedding bells spell married bliss
Before good friends and sealed with kiss
A chance encounter comes to this
Forevermore we will reminisce

Something old and something new
Something borrowed, something blue
To thine own self you must be true
“Guests assemble – pull up a pew!”

The aisle is long, the mood is warm
At its end stands Father Norm
Of rights and wrongs he will inform
The marriage vows they will perform

From church to Sarsfield all process
To wish them well with all success
Guys and gals dressed to impress
“Long night ahead would be my guess!”

Eating, speeches, dancing, swill
Who on earth will pay the bill?
Fr Norm is at the grill
Again Aunt Bertha plays the dill!

The guests are tired and go to bed
So happy, sated, overfed
The sun comes up in blazing red
The couple present, newly wed

Open plains and open spaces
Happy thoughts and smiling faces
Maypoles, sacks and egg-spoon races
Guests and friends put through their paces

What a time it’s been for all
Half the town has had a ball
Bride and Groom are standing tall
With every creature great and small

A SUMMER’S DAY

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day
When the sun is high and the breeze is cool
Sausages sizzling by the lawn
And children playing by the pool

There are of course those other days
With rain and clouds and noise and hail
That we resent but battle through
In case our smiles and joy might fail

But look! – at last – the sun comes out
Burst through the clouds  it glows a’forth
And warms my heart its vision fierce
For once again life shows its worth.

TREASURE HUNT

Hunt for treasure in your soul
For only then can you be whole
And inner riches there will be
If you dig deep to set them free!

For as we wander on life’s road
The seeds of greatness may be sowed
So find and plant them: Nurture! Grow!
To last through e’en the winter snow

As life’s rich journey ducks and weaves
On dusty paths through fallen leaves
Remember this advice and say:
“Seek the rainbow – not the grey!”

The Poet and the Painter, Poetry Reading • Traralgon, VIC

Come and see Miriam in Traralgon. Located east of Morwell Traralgon is the largest city in the Latrobe Valley, which is home to most of Victoria’s power generation facilities.

The city’s large commercial centre includes the Stockland Traralgon Shopping Centre, South Side Central which incorporates the major regional railway station, and shops which line the attractive streets of Franklin Street, Seymour Street and Hotham Street. The landmark building in the town centre is the elegant and towering post office building, which dates back to 1887.

Wide tree-lined streets, attractive gardens, and a thriving commercial centre are characteristics of the Traralgon of todaY.
